Wuthering Waves

This article is about the particular daily experience of playing this gacha game and how to enjoy it. For a broader view, see the main article Wuthering Waves part 1Wuthering Waves part 1

Obviously the goal of playing this or any other game is to have fun, and here a major way to do that is to play with your favorite characters and level up them to their maximum potential, having fun blasting enemies and clearing various challenges. To state the obvious, the game is intentionally designed to keep you playing every day to constantly think about the game and its currencies, which probably eventually leads you to spend some money on it.
In practice to “have fun” in this game, you need to maximize the income of the Astrites currency, while also being mindful about some other currencies (Radiant Tides, Lustrous Tides, and Forging Tides).
Astrites are primarly used to gamble for the characters via the “Convene” gacha, making them playable beyond scripted story content. You can buy the same character 6 additional times to make them stronger. Each character also has their own prefered weapon that tends to make them much more powerful, and you can buy that weapon several times to improve the numbers.
The enjoyment-to-spending ratio in wuwa is pretty good, but only if you work to maximize your Astrite income. So here’s how to do it:
Every day
In this order:
- Spend the 240 waveplates. If you don’t, they spill over to the reserve at a reduced rate and eventually fill to a cap and go entirely to waste.
- There are several ways to spend the waveplates, all of them are useful. If you don’t have a particular need, character and weapon experience trials might be the most useful.
- Complete all the guidebook daily events. Spending 180 waveplates is generally enough to do this. Sometimes you might need to do some extra task.
- Complete the podcast achievements. You should probably be continuosly paying the ~7e monthly subscription to get the better rewards here — the gains are much greater than for other ways to spend money in the game.
- Complete any login reward events. These are quite common temporary events that only require you to click through the menus to claim the rewards.
Theoretically speaking, it only takes like 5 minutes every day to do the above.
Every week (the reset is on Monday)
- Fight the “mid bosses” which are capped to three rewards per week. If you don’t, you might eventually become bottlenecked by those reward resources.
- Complete weekly events such as The Fantasies of the Thousand Gateways event (160 Astrites)
Every “banner” (about three weeks)
Banners are the characters offered for “pulling” in the Convenes. Basically you want to be following the news enough to know if characters to your liking are coming up and when. Even if you maximize your Astrite gains and pay the reasonable Astrite subscription every week, it won’t be enough to pull every character, and certainly not the weapons banners too. So pick your favorites in advance and then be ready to pull them by keeping track of your “finances”.
Pulling a new character
You never want to fail at pulling a character because it’s incredible expensive to do so. The basic math is that 80 pulls “guarantees” a 5 star outcome, but that “good outcome” is only 50% the one in the banner. However if you get a “wrong good outcome”, then the next 80 pulls are guaranteed to get the “intented good outcome”, ie the banner character. So you should prepare for the very worst case which is spending 160 pulls, each costing 160 Astrites, meaning you should have at least 25000 Astrites in the bank before doing the first pull. The need for preparation is that if you fail to pull the character during the banner, the pulls go to waste (maybe not entirely but perhaps too complex for a normal person to understand).
Doing the pulls now, you might actually get the character earlier than the 160th pull, so now you can start to plan for your next pull, which might be the weapon for that particular Resonator available during the same banner. The weapon pulls work the same way except there is no 50/50 rule and instead you are guaranteed to get the weapon during the first 80 pulls.
If you are willing to spend money, then after the Lunite subscription the best value are the packages that bundle Radiant Tides and Astrites.
Every “version” (two banners, about six weeks)
This means game “minor version”, such as advancing from 2.5 to 2.6. It is not like a typical software release, but more like a very regular and well-published major game content update. The version news list the new banners and other major updates such as new monsters and events.
- Get all the 70 podcast rewards. It’s enough to do the daily deeds to get this.
- Complete as much of the “Hazard zone” of Tower of Adversity as you can (you need optimized 90 level characters to fully complete it). The maximum score here is a great total of 800 Astrites.
- Check out the new events. You will also want to progress the story because new characters always relate to the latest story developments. Even though you can pull the characters before meeting them in the story, you might be unable to level them up and effectively play them if you cannot yet access the map areas that provide resources needed by them (for example leveling up Lupa requires access to Septimont).
New events also often offer extra rewards during the first banner/version they are scheduled, even if the events then become permanent. So in order to not miss those rewards, keep an eye on the new events and don’t fall too much behind in the story.
In the meanwhile
When none of the above are actively occuring, you might want to just enjoy the game. Explore the regions for fun and to complete the related goals. Level up your characters to the max. Complete the numerous side and character quests. Complete the permanent events.
