Visual novels

Cover for the original 2004 release of Fate/stay night

This is a list of visual novels I have played, all of them in Japanese except where mentioned.

Text with voice acting is great for learning the language, and back in the day without superb OCR software, text hookers were very handy for extracting text and copy-pasting into dictionaries.

Older

  • Little Busters: Solid but boring.
  • Katawa ShoujoKatawa Shoujo (English): Great project but the game is not quite good enough.
  • Clannad (English): Probably better watch the anime.
  • Saya no Uta (English)
  • VA-11 Hall-A (Western VN)
  • Digital A Love Story (Western VN)
  • Analogue A Hate Story (Western VN)

I might play these some day

  • Sakura no Uta -Sakura no Mori no Ue o Mau- https://vndb.org/v562
  • Soukou Akki Muramasa: https://vndb.org/v2016 MC voice acting. Very Long.
  • Dies Irae: https://vndb.org/v548 MC voice acting. Very Long.
  • ef - a fairy tale of the two: https://vndb.org/v88 MC voice acting.
  • Ore-tachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai - Under the Innocent Sky: https://vndb.org/v1141
  • Maitetsu: https://vndb.org/v18131
  • Fate/Stay Night: “Realta Nua” is the voice-acted version, without sex scenes
  • Tsukihime
  • Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Has voice acted and improved art versions
  • Cross Channel: I tried playing this once, but realized immediately in the introduction my Japanese isn’t at its sharpest. So I thought to google some translations and I found site of the translator who described the game as “extremely difficult in any language”, and I kind of lost faith there.
  • さくら、もゆ。-as the Night’s, Reincarnation-: https://vndb.org/v22313
  • Yosuga no Sora
A large list of visual novel recommendations using a five stars based ranking system
Someone probably played all these, and also the bad ones not listed
