Grumpy Jiisan
Grumpy Jiisan was a legendary anime reviewer who proved the hobby knows no age limit. Jiisan also had particularly good taste.
I think people who have grown up with pop culture will not or at least should not stop liking it simply because they become old.
It doesn’t ask you to suspend your disbelief — you have to reject common sense entirely and accept the impossible”
Watching many Grumpy Jiisan reviews, how is he so good? Great insights and impeccable taste. It’s a damn shame he is so unknown, judging by the view counts. (Apparently he is more popular on nico nico!) The only thing I take issue is that he seems to prefer dubs, but I’m actually not sure if instead of personal preference he is doing so to make his videos more accessible and so help anime spread. It seems he usually watches both the original and the dub. He has a very long catalogue of reviews, so I can understand how he does not seem to read or mention about the materials (manga/VN) the anime are often adapted from. I guess in some sense that’s better than the modern FOMO attitude that makes the fans of Japanese media spread themselves too thin — I’m certainly affected by that.
I wonder what his profession was, and how we funded buying all those DVD and laserdisc imports. Probably retired for some time and that’s how he has the time to do all that hiking, anime watching and scripting the reviews.
